The romantic teary-eyed proposal happened. You have celebrated with all of your loved ones and have made it Facebook official with that gorgeous ring shot. Now it is time to start planning your big day! You start looking for a photographer by googling “weddings photographers in Kansas City”. About 7 million results pop up and you are instantly overwhelmed and you don’t know where to go next. Not every photographer (or any vendor) is a perfect fit for you. Being able to narrow down that 7 million list will help take the stress away and you will be able to take one more task off of your wedding to-do list.

Here are a few tips to help you find the photographer that will capture your wedding day.

Figure Out Your Budget and Date

I recommend that you find out what your budget is for each vendor and overall. Prioritize what matters to you, what you need to have at your wedding, and what can be cut out if needed. Check to see if your photographer offers an “off-season” pricing, which can help you stretch that budget out. Doing this helps you get an idea on how much money you can invest into each vendor and that list will start to diminish.

Same thing goes for figuring out your wedding date. You might find your dream photographer but they already have another wedding booked on your wedding date. If you have a date or season you want in particular, you might have to book out a year or two. September through November is easily becoming the most popular time for weddings and some photographers are already booked up for fall of 2023.

Style Is Everything

Each photographer has a style of editing that makes them stand out from all the rest. And as a customer, you will find that you gravitate towards an editing style. It is important to find a photographer with the style you prefer. If you like their portfolio, then you will have an idea what your wedding photos will look like.

Don’t know what to call the style you like? Look at samples on Instagram and Pinterest! Social media is a great way to find up to date portfolios. I have a bright and warm style while other photographers’ styles can range from bright and airy to dark and moody.

What Is Included In The Package?

Each photographer will price and structure their wedding packages differently. Some photographers will include prints, a second photographer at your wedding, and even a complimentary engagement session in their packages. I recommend prioritizing what you would want in the package. They might even have add-ons for an additional price.

Don't Be Afraid To Meet Your Photographer

I believe that it is important to meet your photographer before your wedding day. I encourage couples to schedule an engagement session before their wedding date. This gives you a glimpse into how your photographer is going to be on your wedding day. This session also gives you a chance to interact with your photographer and get comfortable in front of their camera. Your wedding day can be a little chaotic and you want to be as relaxed with your photographer as possible.

If you don’t want to do an engagement session, that is ok. I still recommend having a consultation with your photographer. I will always be available via text or email, but it is not the same as a face-to-face conversation. I recommend having a consultation in person, if not, a Zoom meeting is just as good. During this time, you can ask any questions you may have and get to meet the person behind the lens.
